Transcript: Preparing Your Students for Teamwork "Setting the Climate"

So I start off by saying this is going to be different than you expect, and then from there I say, “We are going to do some things differently. We’re going to do projects.” And when they look at your syllabus, and they see how you assign percentages to various things, they realize exams aren’t ninety percent of their grade and homework is the other ten. They realize there are other means of obtaining . . . grades. They’re going to have to work in projects. They’re going to have to be a part of a team, and there are multiple indicators to the students that it is not necessarily their typical course. If I say it verbally, I typically just say, “This is my syllabus: this is what I expect.” I have a statement in my syllabus that says this is a two-way street. If you see things that apply to the course, please bring them so others may learn as well, and try to bring in the everyday happenings into the statistics course.
