Widget Inspection and Team Activity

Developed by Dr. Patricia Brackin, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Instructions to Students

1.

Widget Inspections

Each team member must inspect another team member’s widget. You may not inspect your own widget. Record your values on the provided Widget Inspection Checklist. Once the inspections have all been completed, staple all of the team’s inspection sheets together and submit them as a team. Each sheet should have the individual widget taped to it.

Widget Team Activity Sheet—Parts I and II

Teams are to work together to complete the team activity. As a team, you are to identify reasons that a widget might not meet specifications. Brainstorm as many as you possibly can. Be sure to assign a recorder and an encourager/gatekeeper for the brainstorming activity. You must have at least 50 reasons. Review your brainstorming list and determine the most probable 5 reasons that a widget might not meet specifications. List these 5 reasons in the space provided on the Widget Team Activity Sheet. Each student will have a copy of this sheet. While only one of the sheets needs to have the brainstorming list from Part I, all students much write in the 5 most probable reasons determined by the group for Part II on their own sheets.

Widget Team Activity Sheet—Part III

Each student is to answer the last question on the Widget Team Activity Sheet on his/her own. The question is as follows:
One reason that you have been required to machine the widget is to gain practical experience, which will hopefully help you to become a better designer. What have you learned from machining the widget that will help you as a designer?
Take some time to really think about this question and about your answer. Once all team members have finished this answer, staple all the team members’ Widget Team Activity Sheets together and submit them to the instructor
