            Widget Inspection and Team Activity

Developed by Dr. Patricia Brackin, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Overview:

The purpose of this activity is to have each student inspect the widget created by a teammate. Students follow a checklist in making these evaluations.

Learning Objectives or Student Outcomes:

By the end of this lesson or activity, students will be able to
1. evaluate the design of another student and explain their evaluations using given criteria.
2. work as a team to brainstorm a list of reasons why the widgets would not meet specifications.
3. answer a reflective question about the effectiveness of the widget assignment in giving them practical experience.

Length of  Activities:

These activities takes approximately one hour—half for the widget inspections and half for the completion of the Widget Team Activity Sheet.

Assignment(s) to Ensure Student Preparation:

Each student needs to have a completed widget prior to coming to class. Previous classes have covered the design of the widget and where to go to create the widget. It is imperative that the students have their widgets; if they do not, they will not be able to participate in the evaluation of a teammate’s widget.

Team Size/Composition:

Although the teams have already been established as teams of 4, for this activity, the students may simply exchange their widgets with one other team member. In the instance that one team member did not bring a completed widget, however, it is helpful to have the larger teams, where the exchange can take place regardless of the one missing widget.

How is positive interdependence ensured?

Teammates must work together to evaluate each other’s widgets. They must also work together to complete the first two parts of the Widget Team Activity Sheet.

How is individual accountability built in to the project?

Each student is expected to create and bring to class his/her own widget. If he/she does not do so, an evaluation of the individual’s widget cannot be completed. Additionally, each student must turn in a copy of the Widget Team Activity Sheet. The last question on this sheet is an individual question

Components of Assessment:

Each student is assessed on his/her own widget, on the evaluation he/she completed on another student’s widget, and on the completion of the team activity sheet.

Team Skills Needed for Success:

All team members must have the ability to communicate and to give and receive constructive feedback.

How Are Team Skills Emphasized?

These skills are emphasized through the completion of the widget inspections and through the completion of the Widget Team Activity Sheets.

Materials Needed by Students:

Each student needs
• the widget which he/she created
• a Widget Inspection Checklist
• a Widget Team Activity Sheet
