 Teambuilding Workshop II
(Follow-Up to Workshop I)

Developed by the First Year Engineering Program faculty
at Ohio State University
(with support from the Gateway Engineering Education Coalition and NSF)

Overview:

The purpose of this activity is to have teams assess their performance as a team after having operated as one for the duration of the quarter. At the beginning of the quarter, they participated in Teambuilding Workshop I.

Learning Objectives or Student Outcomes:

By the end of this lesson or activity, students will be able to
1. assess their team’s progress over the past quarter.
2. determine what “lessons learned” they can carry forward.
3. provide the instructor with input that can be used to improve the teambuilding part of the course.

 Length of Workshop:

This activity should take approximately one hour or less.

Assignment(s) to Ensure Student Preparation:

Although there are no specific assignments to ensure student preparation, all of the work that students have done as a team throughout the duration of the quarter will come into play in this workshop, which serves as a follow-up to both the cumulative teamwork and the Teambuilding Workshop I, in which they participated at the outset of the quarter.

Team Size/Composition:

They will be working with their established teams from the quarter. In general, teams of 4 work best, although teams of 3 or 5 students each may be formed if necessary.

How is positive interdependence ensured?

In this workshop, the students will be working first individually and then together to rate the relative importance of the different “critical success factors” related to working as a team, as laid out by the instructor.

How is individual accountability built in to the project?

Each student is expected to complete his or her own rating of the “critical success factors” prior to the team coming to a consensus.

Components of Assessment:

Students are assessed on their individual ratings of the “critical success factors” and on their team’s cumulative rating and completion of the questions regarding “lessons learned.”

Team Skills Needed for Success:

All team members must have the ability to communicate, to share ideas and opinions, and to give and receive feedback.

How Are These Skills Emphasized?

These skills are emphasized through the team completion of one Critical Success Factors/Lessons Learned worksheet. Team members must come to a consensus on their ratings/answers.

Materials Needs for Instructor:

• Critical Success Factors/Lessons Learned worksheets (one for each team)
• PowerPoint presentation for review of “critical success factors” (Teambuilding Workshop II PowerPoint.ppt)

Materials Needed by Students:

Each team needs one Critical Success Factors/Lessons Learned worksheet.
