 Internal Flow Jigsaw

Developed by Dr. Don Richards, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Instructions to Students

1. Team Completion of Internal Flow Jigsaw Questions
One way to reduce the work that all of us have to do to learn new material is to divide up the material, each of us become an “expert” on a small area, and then share what we’ve learned with others. This active learning technique is commonly referred to as a Jigsaw because, like a jigsaw puzzle, each of us contributes a small piece of knowledge that helps everyone understand the big picture.
As a team, you are to work together to complete the Internal Flow Jigsaw questions. Each student must complete his/her own question as the team works together to find the answers. Teams may choose to take the jigsaw approach one step further here and use that method to complete these questions. In other words, the team members may choose to divide up the questions and then come together to share their answers prior to the instructor bringing the class back together again.

2. Class Sharing of Internal Flow Jigsaw Questions in Relation to the Two Different Flow Regimes
Once students have had sufficient time to complete these questions—approximately 30 to 45 minutes—the professor will pull them back together and ask them to share the answers in relation to the two different flow regimes. Students should be making any necessary corrections to their own answers and also taking notes about the flow that their team did not cover. Each student’s paper should include answers about both laminar and turbulent flow.

3. Collection of One Team Paper
At the end of the class, the instructor will randomly select one member from each team to turn in his/her completed set of questions. The entire group will receive a grade for this one paper. Because this selection will be random, teams must make sure that each member is participating and writing down the group-determined answers on his/her copy of the question sheet. Please be sure that all members understand the questions and answers.
