 Bridge Design Competition

Developed by the First Year Engineering Program faculty
at Ohio State University
(with support from the Gateway Engineering Education Coalition and NSF)

Procedures:

1.

Project Overview

The purpose of this competition is to provide you with a structured activity that will allow you to work as a team in a time-restricted project.  The exercise is designed to foster an ability to apply scientific and engineering knowledge to a practical construction problem.  Hopefully, this will be a challenging but enjoyable exercise.  Each team will be expected to design and fabricate a balsawood bridge to span a distance of 10”.

2.

Introduction to Project through PowerPoint Presentation

Use the PowerPoint presentation, Introduction to the Bridge Competition, to prepare the students for the project. The presentation covers the following:
• An agenda for the bridge project introduction
• Background information on bridges
• Common forms of failure
• The project packet handout
• A review of the assignment
• A description of supplied materials
• Examples of past bridges
• Bridge testing procedure and apparatus
• Grade assessment criteria
• Resources
• Further assignment information

3. Distribution of the Bridge Design Competition Information Packets and the Bridge Project Memo Guidelines

Distribute the information packet to the students. This is a very thorough packet that includes all the information they should need in order to complete the project.
