I think I said that the most
important thing that we have to do as faculty members is
helping students learn how to learn—or, another way of
saying it, preparing them for this idea of lifelong
learning. Through a traditional lecture class, we teach them
how to be stenographers, and to go memorize whatever it is
that they have to memorize, and to regurgitate that on an
exam. In the active, cooperative classroom, students
actually have to learn how to learn, because they have to
learn how to communicate their ideas to other individuals
while they're in that teaming environment. I think that's
what this is all about.
