Director, Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence
The Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence serves Arizona State University faculty and members of the teaching corps located on four campuses across the metropolitan Phoenix area. Under the Office of the Provost, the Center director serves as a teacher-scholar providing leadership, coordination, technical assistance, and training for the development of teaching strategies that enhance student learning outcomes, which are designed by faculty within individual units; plans and coordinates a variety of faculty development opportunities in both face-to-face and online environments; secures external funding to help support University educational innovations; and facilitates the exchange of information and expertise within the campus community relating to effective practice in teaching and learning.
Essential duties:
- Manage and lead the Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence in its support of faculty development activities described above
- Provide input for the University’s efforts to develop and enhance measures of student learning outcomes working closely with the University Office of Evaluation
- Work with faculty and administration to plan and coordinate opportunities for faculty to develop further the knowledge and skills required to facilitate student learning
- Provide training, consultation, and technical assistance to faculty and academic units to strengthen their capacity to assess student learning;
- Collaborate with other units within the university to develop and promote programs and initiatives based on the Design Aspirations of the New American University;
- Provide leadership to incorporate principles and practices of effective pedagogy in all learning situations, in class and in expanding technology-mediated and web-based learning;
- In collaboration with the Graduate College, design programming to strengthen graduate teaching and training;
- Obtain external funding to develop and support the types of innovative pedagogy being undertaken at the University
- Serve on university-wide committees and represent the University to external organizations as appropriate; and
- Work with a faculty advisory group to be appointed by the Provost.
Knowledge and abilities:
- Knowledge of the theories, models and practices that undergird the processes of teaching, learning, and assessment.
- Knowledge of best practices in higher education, which focus on student learning outcomes and assessment of learning.
- Knowledge and expertise in organizing faculty development opportunities in higher education.
- The ability to work collaboratively and effectively across disciplinary boundaries with faculty, students and staff.
- Knowledge of sound personnel practices and procedures.
- Ability to plan, organize, and direct others in the formation of program and policy in the operation of the various activities of CLTE.
- An understanding of and commitment to the learning needs of students from historically underserved populations.
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and management skills, and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- A strong commitment to innovation, experimentation and quality in education.
- Skills of collaboration, leadership and facilitation.
- Repertoire of innovative pedagogy appropriate for assets-based approaches to learning.
- Knowledge of both classroom-based and program assessment, specifically outcomes-based assessment.
- Knowledge of and implementation strategies for adult learning theory.
- Familiarity with current trends in scholarship of teaching and application.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree.
- Significant experience teaching in a culturally diverse institution of higher education.
- Minimum of (3) years of experience managing, directing, or coordinating innovative educational programs, with a particular emphasis on outcomes-based education, learning assessment, and faculty development.
- Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience in designing and implementing a variety of approaches to teaching and learning pedagogy and assessment in higher education.
- Ability to translate the New American University’s Design Aspirations into programming.
- A track record for obtaining external funding from public or private sources.
- Collaborative leadership, development, and management skills, and
- A record of successful teaching at the post-secondary level of education.
